  Haiti Project
Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is ravaged by illnesses from tainted water. The board of UNA-Boulder voted in April, 2008, to raise funds to help bring safe drinking water to a non-profit organization in Haiti that promotes education and apprenticeships for young adults. Starthrower Foundation, founded in 2004 by a Canadian teacher and youth minister, sponsors about 130 street children and other poor adolescents at a center in Cap Haitien and another in the mountain town of Sen Rafayel. Sponsorship includes basic nutrition, dental, and medical care, as well as funds for tuition, exams, school uniforms, texts and supplies. Raw sewage and fertilizer have polluted the well at the Starthrower center in Cap Haitien. Staff members have to purchase jugs of drinking water to try to keep students free of parasite infections and other waterborne illnesses. They need a portable, solar-powered water purification system to meet their long-term goal of supplying four gallons of clean water a day for each child to take home. UNA-Boulder plans to partner with other organizations and friends to raise funds for an appropriate water purification system. In the meantime, we plan to start buying potable water from UN headquarters in Cap Haitien. Please donate to help us solve Starthrower’s water problem and keep Haitian students healthy!
