Adopt-A-Minefield: Colorado Initiative The Adopt-A-Minefield effort in Colorado is a joint project of UNA-Boulder, the Boulder Friends of UNICEF, UNA-Colorado Division, and the Denver Area Committee for UNICEF. Together, we raised $150,000 in the first nine years of the project.
By January, 2008, we were de-mining our ninth minefield in Mozambique, and had earned enough money to begin on a tenth. The number of Mozambican casualties from mines had dropped from hundreds a year to 35 in 2007.
Mozambique was chosen for de-mining when the project began, because after 17 years of civil war, the country was at peace and beginning reconstruction. Minefield clearance opens up safe access to water, schools, and farmland.
Worldwide, in seventy countries, some 60 to 100 million land-mines lie in wait for innocent victims. Landmines are easily and cheaply laid during conflicts, but it is up to civilians and peacetime governments to clear them.
Please join us in this campaign to rid the world of land-mines. Every penny of your tax-deductible contribution will go to cover the direct costs of de-mining.
